Designer: Hasegawa Sadanobu III Era: Early Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This is from the set "Chûkô Kabuki Jûhachiban (忠孝歌舞伎十八番)" (18 Kabuki Plays of Loyalty), a collection of designs by Sadanobu Hasegawa III (1881-1963), an ukiyo-e artist in Osaka, based on the 18 famous Kabuki plays, and published by Uchida Bijutsu Shoshi in 1941. The woodblock prints are pasted on shiki-shi (square piece of fancy paperboard). It depicts a scene showing the hero, Watonai, in the kabuki play "Kokusen'ya Kassen" (The Battles of Coxinga) with his face shading and flames in hand in a powerful manner. This print is browned with age and has some spots, soiling, and creases. Also, there are a few pinholes at the bottom. It's a little curled because the print is pasted on a backboard.
