Description: This print is from the set "Ukiyo-e Beauties Overseas" (在外浮世絵美人画逸品集) which consists of 12 reprints of bijin-ga (beautiful women paintings) from Boston and Chicago museums collection.

In this print, Utamaro is depicting yotaka (night hawk), a prostitute of the lowest class. They were private prostitutes who waited for customers in the dark of night in deserted places. In reality, it is said there were few beautiful women, but Utamaro conveys refined beauty here.
