Designer: Aoigaoka Hokkei Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: From the set, Shokoku Meisho (Celebrated Places of Various Provinces), representative landscape prints among Hokkei's relatively few works. The foreground of this print presents some passengers in a ferry boat that are flurried in a sudden storm of wind and rain, holding a mat overhead or trying to hold umbrellas tight against the wind. The storm is really heavy and strong, we can perceive the concern of the passengers by looking into their faces. The artist Hokkei was influenced by Hokusai: the figures in the boat in this print are direct translations of Hokusai's brushwork and manner of portrayal. The drawing of the figures presents a realistic style, but we can see that the birds on the left part of the print are designed more in a naive kind of style.
