Designer: Ryuryukyo Shinsai Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: From the series, Eight Scenic Sights of Omi (Omi Hakkei). The eight pictures of the series show characteristic lines of drawing; the monotonous lines contouring mountains, lakes, earthbanks and houses suggest the influence of Western etchings. Ryuryukyo Shinsai appears to be an artist interested in, and influenced by Western manner of representation. Another characteristic of the print is his economized statement in simple drawing, shading and coloring and in frank compositions consisting of only a few elements. There is also a wide expanse of space by placing the horizon at a low position. The mountains and trees are seen across the river, the steeply sloping roofs of houses in the foreground, as well as the compositional plan as a whole, lead us to believe that the artist was inspired by Hokusai's. We can notice some colorless clouds on the horizon. They have a three-dimensional relief and they can be appreciated if the print is placed under a spot of light. This print presents a heavy toning and faded colors. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
