One of the traditional printers living and working in Tokyo for many years, Mr. Tsutomu Mitamura, has decided to try his hand at issuing some print reproductions himself. He is a huge fan of Kawanabe Kyosai's work, and has begun his publishing activities with a series of reproductions of some of Kyosai's Yokai related designs. He arranged for one of the younger carvers in the traditional crafts association, Kayoko Suga, to do the carving, and did the printing himself. --- In this picture, the old man and woman from the Noh play Takasago perform against the backdrop of the rising sun. Perhaps Kyōsai is pointing to the proverb, “Old People Drinking Cold Water”, which admonishes the elderly for doing things inappropriate for their age. In addition to the old man and woman, Kyōsai includes a variety of things, such as a crane dancing with a folding fan on top of the rake the man is balancing, and a tortoise drinking sake while enjoying the performance.
