Designer: Tawaraya Sōtatsu Era: Late Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This large-format print is a woodblock reproduction of a screen painting from the early 1700s. It was made by the Tansei-sha company (from Kyoto) in the early 1980s, as part of a set of reproductions of classical paintings (we have a few others from the set in our catalogue at the moment ...). This was the 'bubble era' in Japan, when the streets were awash in cash. Projects that would - in more sensible times - have been not financially viable, were able to attract enough buyers to move forward, and Tansei-sha made the most of this opportunity. (As did the Momose Company, which made a large number of reproductions of paintings in the same period.) The original painting is known as 紙本金地著色風神雷神図 (Gods of Wind and Thunder), depicting depicting two gods in the Shinto religion and Japanese mythology: Raijin, the god of lightning, thunder, and storms, and Fūjin, the god of wind.
