Description: This print is from a collection of woodblock prints of beautiful women from the Meiji period by a number of leading designers of the day, including Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Ogata Gekko, and Kaburagi Kiyokata. The collection "Meiji no Onna" (Women of Meiji) was published in 1977 by Soudosha, and most of the designs were being reproduced for the first time.

This one is from the series 'Thirty-Two Phases of Manners and Customs' which depicts women of various ages and classes from the late Edo period to the Meiji period and is one of Yoshitoshi's classic sets of bijin-ga.

It depicts an upper-class wife dressed in western-style before a background of irises. The coloring of purple is excellent which matches the fashionable dress and iris flowers.

As visible, the paper at the upper right is slightly wavy ...
