Description: This print is one of more than thirty Utamaro made that depict the relationship between Yamauba and her adopted son, Kintarō.

The child in Yamamba's arms is Kintarō of Mount Ashigara. Her unkempt, shaggy hair indicates that the woman is Yamamba. Yamamba is portrayed not as a terrifying demoness but as a young and beautiful mother, filled with the innocence of a child and the longing for maternal love.

This print is a post-war reproduction by the Adachi Company.
