Description: In the immediate post-war period, the publisher Takamizawa issued a number of prints based on designs by Hokusai, with an interesting twist - they colourised them.

Hokusai's famous "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji" (Fugaku Hyakkei) was originally issued as a set of three illustrated books, with the entire project being done in muted tones of black and grey.

The print you see here - originally a left-right spread in the book - has been re-created as a single sheet, with colours added by the post-war craftsmen.

The brown-colored crops appear to be ripened rice waiting to be harvested. Under the clear autumn sky, these rice fields would have shone in gold color, reflecting the sunlight.

In this scene, Hokusai depicted various people; in the center, there is a local woman with her child, a man holding horse reins, and others who appear to be travelers and peddlers. The man seen second from the left, playing the flute, is known as a ’Chinese candy vendor’; those men used to wear foreigner-like outfits, speak in a non-native way, and play an instrument to attract people's attention.

On the right there is a small cultivated hill; three farmers are seen carrying goods, and there is a shrine at the top.

In the distance, Mt. Fuji peacefully overlooks the good harvest.
