Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketNew Year's Sake CupSize: 21.5cm by 18.0cm (8.46 in by 7.09 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [M] ? Designer: Gakutei Harunobu Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: A Meiji era reproduction of a surimono originally designed by Gakutei Harunobu. We are looking at a kettle for heating o-sake, along with a shallow red lacquered cup, partially wrapped in cloth/tissue, depicted through embossing. The title could be read 正月酒美録 (meaning something like "New Year's Sake is precious"). The other text is a (nearly impossible to translate) Kyōka (狂歌: 'wild' or 'mad' poetry). A close-up of the sake cup. There are very faint (pine needle?) patterns on the sake pot. The print is not in perfect condition: there are creases in the upper area, and some abrasion at the bottom left (visible the first close-up photo above). The backside of the print. Mokuhankan actually owns the very woodblock with which the key line printing on this print was done ... (not for sale) The reverse of the woodblock.
