Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketRiverboat in the SnowSize: 52.5cm by 20.5cm (20.67 in by 8.07 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [XL] ? Designer: Kitagawa Utamaro Era: Mid Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This (very tall) print was issued by the Takamizawa company in the mid-1970s. They included an interesting information sheet together with it, quoted here: "Toward the end of the Kansei (1789-1800) Period, Utamaro had already passed his peak as a woodblock artist. His popularity, however, continued to rise and so did the demand for his prints. Consequently, he was forced to paint to excess. Also, he showed a growing indulgence in portraying men and women in love. He presumably realized that his artistic prime had left him and sought consolation in something new, deviating from his long pursuit of the ideal beauty of a woman. 'A Houseboat in Snow' is the most typical, and the most successful, of his works in that period. Here a young man and a geisha are out on a houseboat for snow-viewing. Utamaro gave the woman an exaggerated height which, matching the picture's length, makes her look attractively elegant in her purple kimono." Note: there is a slight crease near the bottom of the print, where Takamizawa folded it to fit their packaging. A few light foxing spots are present, but the overall condition is good.
