Description: This book collection was published by the Takamizawa Company in the pre-war period (Showa 12 - or 1936). At the time, they were the pre-eminent publisher of ukiyo-e reproduction prints, producing them in a wide variety of sizes and versions.

This collection of 100 hand-carved hand-printed woodblock prints represents an overview of the entire history of the ukiyo-e era (although their selection emphasized 'beauties' and includes very few landscapes).

The designs are here reproduced in the traditional ハガキ (hagaki) size (roughly equivalent to a postcard), and are astonishingly well carved, most of them being line-for-line versions of designs originally published in a far larger format.

The book was published in a subscription format: the binder and first few prints were sent to the collector at the start, and subsequent shipments of prints were made over the following months.

The prints are all backed with card stock, making them firm enough to allow the collectors to place them in corner slots that were prepared on every page of the album.
