His family moved to Japan when he was two, and then to Kyoto when he was a teenager. There, in the ancient capital of Japan, he studied fabric dyeing and eventually woodblock printing. During his long career he created a variety of print series, and this print depicting the idyllic village of Miyama (where traditional thatch-roofed homes have been preserved even today) comes from his '100 Views of Kyoto' series.
