Description: This is an onnagata portrait by Sharaku depicting a scene in the kabuki programme titled "Katakiuchi Noriai Banashi."

(Take a deep breath, please, before you dive in here...)

The "Katakiuchi Noriai Banashi" is a kabuki kyogen programme combining a story of revenge by Miyagino and her sister Shinobu in the "Gotaiheiki Shiroishi Banashi" and the story of "Katakiuchi Ganryujima." It is a story about Miyagino and Shinobu sisters' exacting their revenge on Shiga Daishichi, who killed their father, Matsushita Mikinoshin, with the help of Sakanaya Gorobei in Sanya. In this print we see Matsumoto Yonesaburo playing Shinobu, the younger sister of Matsushita Mikinoshin, who was sold to the licensed quarters as a courtesan due to poverty.
