Designer: Katsukawa Shunsen Era: Edo | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This is one of the oldest prints we have here at the Mokuhankan, dating from around 1810. This is one print from the "Uki-e Chushingura" series by Katsukawa Shunsen (also known as Shunkō II). The popularity of the Chushingura play led to its adaptation for the kabuki stage, and it is presumed that a kabuki version of the work was the basis for this particular set of prints. This print shows Act 6 of the play. Uki-e, "perspective picture", refers to a genre of ukiyo-e that employs western conventions of linear perspective. Although they never constituted more than a minor genre, pictures in perspective were drawn and printed by Japanese artists from their introduction in the late 1730s through to the mid-nineteenth century. There are a few creases, a couple of patches, and two holes to this antique print, as you can see in the image. A man prepares his palanquin for carrying a passenger. Some people mourn the death of a character outside of the image, and a man argues terms of a contract. A long summary of the events of this play is available on Wikipedia here.
