Designer: Kano Masanobu Era: Late Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print is a woodblock reproduction of a classical landscape painting from the 1500s. It was made by the Tansei-sha company (from Kyoto) in the early 1980s, as part of a set of reproductions of classical scroll and screen paintings. This was the 'bubble era' in Japan, when the streets were awash in cash. Projects that would - in more sensible times - have been not financially viable, were able to attract enough buyers to move forward, and Tansei-sha made the most of this opportunity. (As did the Momose Company, which made a large number of reproductions of paintings in the same period.) The documentation included together with the set of prints tells us that 85 printing impressions were used on this design. The original was a scroll painting, and the carvers and printers have used multiple layers of colour to imitate the 'washes' of the original. The set was issued as a 'limited edition' at the time (200 copies), and the one we have is numbered 29, but it should be acknowledged that prints from this series are seen in the wild without numbers, so almost certainly the publisher just kept going after issuing the initial batch.
