Description: This is an unusual item in our Flea Market catalogue - a freshly made print, but not by us here at Mokuhankan. One of the traditional printers living and working in Tokyo for many years, Mr. Tsutomu Mitamura, has decided to try his hand at issuing some print reproductions himself. He is a huge fan of Kawanabe Kyosai's work, and has begun his publishing activities with a series of reproductions of some of Kyosai's Yokai related designs. He arranged for one of the younger carvers in the traditional crafts association, Kayoko Suga, to do the carving, and did the printing himself.

No records of “The Dream of Lord Saka” as a proverb are known, but “Lord Saka” refers Lord Sakata no Kintoki, who went by the name of Kintarō in his youth, and was one of the great leaders who served under the general Minamoto no Yorimitsu in the mid-Heian period, and was famed for defeating the giant spider demon Tsuchigumo. In this image, the sleeping Lord dreams of his favorite foods while surrounded by Tsuchigumo and other monsters. It may have been based on the more complicated proverb “Dreams of Kyoto, Dreams of Osaka”, which points to the fact that a variety of unrelated things can appear in one’s dreams.
