Description: This print is also known as "Night Rain at Karasaki" (Karasaki yau). The original print was made in the 1830s, although this particular print is a post-war reproduction.

Rain falls on a large pine tree, its boughs supported with stakes. The print is part of the "Eight Views of Ômi" (Ômi hakkei no uchi) series by Hiroshige. "This set of 'Eight Views of Lake Biwa' is based on a series of subjects used in Japanese art since the Muromachi Period (1392-1573) and in turn based on the classic Chinese series 'Eight Views of the Xiaoxiang Rivers'" (quoted from the British Museum Collections).

For more information on the Eight Views series, please see Dave's YouTube video on the topic.
