Designer: Yamamoto Shoun Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This is one print from the "Ima Sugata" ("Present-Day Beauties") series by artist and designer Yamamoto Shoun (1870-1965), also known as Matsutani Shoun. Shoun, whose work bridges ukiyoe and shin-hanga, was best known for his illustrations for magazines and woodblock-prints of beautiful women. This particular print designed by Shoun, titled "Misuji", was published by Matsuki Heikichi (Daikokuya) in Tokyo in 1907. Many stunning woodblock-printing techniques have been used in this print, including nunomezuri (an embossing technique in which fabric was glued onto woodblock and printed), evident in the hats of the two women pictured, bokashi gradation, present around the eyes of the women, on their clothing, lips, in the background of the print, and so on, and karazuri blind-embossing, visible on the book and lantern pictured. The print is in remarkably good condition, with only a little soiling and one or two small marks visible. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
