Designer: Kuniaki Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: "Kanadehon Chushingura" ("The Treasury of Loyal Retainers"), the title of the series to which this print belongs, was a bunraku puppet play composed in 1748 about the chushingura, perhaps better known in the west as the "Forty-Seven Ronin". The popularity of the play led to its adaptation for the kabuki stage, and it is presumed that a kabuki version of the work was the basis for this particular set of prints. This is one print from the "Kanadehon Chushingura" series by Utagawa Kuniaki. It shows acts III (Denchu Matsu-no-Ma, or Matsu no Roka) and IV (Uramon) of the play. The print depicting act III shows the famous scene of the pine-tree room in the Ashikaga mansion, in which Hangan strikes Moronao but is prevented from killing him by Kakogawa Honzo. The print of act IV depicts Hangan, ordered to take his own life, imparting to his chief retainer Yuranosuke his dying wish to be avenged, before committing harakiri. The print has been mounted on washi paper, and there are some ink marks and light creases to the paper. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
