Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketActs 5 and 6 of Kanadehon ChushinguraSize: 35.5cm by 24.2cm (13.98 in by 9.53 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Kuniaki Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: "Kanadehon Chushingura" ("The Treasury of Loyal Retainers"), the title of the series to which this print belongs, was a bunraku puppet play composed in 1748 about the chushingura, perhaps better known in the west as the "Forty-Seven Ronin". The popularity of the play led to its adaptation for the kabuki stage, and it is presumed that a kabuki version of the work was the basis for this particular set of prints. This is one print from the "Kanadehon Chushingura" series by Utagawa Kuniaki. It shows acts V (Yamazaki Kaido Teppo Watashi no Ba) and VI (Kanpei Harakiri no Ba) of the play. The print depicting act V seems to show Sadakuro about to rob Yoichibei on the Yamazaki Highway in the mountains, while the print showing act VI depicts the suicide by harakiri of Kanpei. The print has been mounted on washi paper, and there is very minor running to some of the inks. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
