Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketA Traveler (Jiraiya in Disguise)Size: 36.5cm by 24.8cm (14.37 in by 9.76 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Toyokuni III (Kunisada) Era: Edo | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This "orphan" print by Toyokuni III (Kunisada) is probably one of two prints. We knew the character depicted was a traveler, probably on the Tokaido road or somewhere similar, because of his traveling hat and baggage, but weren't sure who... A keen-eyed reader, however, was kind enough to let us know that the print depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô VIII as the character Jiraiya disguised for travel. Jiraya, the son of a castle-lord in Kyushu, became the chief of a band of robbers after his father's death during a civil war. He often traveled in disguise, infiltrating the houses of rich men to relieve them of their money and treasures. There are several marks to the print, and some repaired wormholing.
