Designer: Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This is one print from Yoshitoshi's "Lives of Modern People" series depicting a range of personalities from modern and historical times. These prints were published as supplements for certain issues of the Yamato Newspaper, and would have been distributed to subscribers. This particular print shows Lady Tenshoin, the official wife of Tokugawa Iesada, the 13th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. It was the first of Yoshitoshi's print supplements, being published on October 12th, Meiji 19 (1886). In the print, Lady Tenshoin smiles magnanimously at a child who has interrupted her reading of a nagauta book (songbook), perhaps to show her the large cat he is clutching. The blind embossing of the text panel, the cat's fur, and the Lady's eri collar has been nicely done, and the carving around her hairline is very fine. The print has wormholing repairs to the extremities of the print as well as some general discolouration. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
