Description: This print is from the series of 10 prints titled 'Chie no umi' and published by the Takamizawa Company in the immediate post-war period, as part of a very large set of Hokusai reproductions.

The original title has a bit of a double meaning, using the kanji for 'One Thousand Pictures of the Ocean' (千絵の海 ); however, when it is read aloud it can also be interpreted as 'Oceans of Wisdom' (知恵の海).

This specific woodblock print is of fishermen in Choshi in Shimosa province, now part of Ibaragi and Chiba, on the Pacific coast just east of Tokyo.
