Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketSharaku Print Set (21/24)Size: 40.0cm by 26.0cm (15.75 in by 10.24 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Toshusai Sharaku Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This is a fairly rare item for our Flea Market - a set of ukiyo-e reproductions. This particular set was created by the O-Edo Mokuhan-sha, we think probably in the 1970s. The set was originally published with 24 prints, of which 21 are still here. The prints are the same size as the Sharaku originals, over 40cm high. We are putting this set into the Market as a 'bargain' item, at a stunningly low price, amounting to about $20 per print. Why? Because the O-Edo company did not spend anywhere near as much effort on creating solid packaging, as they did on making nice prints. The prints themselves are excellent - made with wonderfully delicate and tasteful carving and well thought-out colour tones. But they packed it all in an awful way - tipping each print onto very poor quality cardboard sheets, enclosed in cheap paper folders. And the prints have suffered over the more than half-century they have been 'trapped' in there. Much of the dark grey mica powder that was used to dust the backgrounds has migrated onto other areas of the paper, leaving many of the prints looking grimy, instead of bright and clean. There is no mold or foxing on the prints themselves, but the wrapping materials are heavily damaged, and the first priority for the new owner will be to remove the prints from the wrappers and store them in a more safe environment (Clear File, etc. etc.). Around half of the prints are 'free' in the wrappers, not glued down, but the other half are lightly glued down at the edge, and will need to be cut loose. There is some splotching on this print, but the rest are not marked like this ... Mica powder was used extensively on the backgrounds to add a beautiful shimmer effect. This is the case and its accompanying set of 21 out of 24 prints, still in the original packaging. The label on the package. The case and the individual wrappers have plenty of foxing, but the prints themselves are safe from any such damage. Some of the prints are glued into their packaging, while many are loose. We highly recommend that the prints be separated from their packaging as soon as possible. This is an example of how the grey mica powder has migrated over the paper surface on many of the prints, leaving a 'grimy' appearance ... All 21 images ...
