Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketStanding Courtesan (calligraphy)Size: 58.0cm by 32.0cm (22.83 in by 12.60 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [XL] ? Designer: Kaigetsudo Anchi Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: In the immediate post-war period, the Adachi Hanga company made a series of reproductions of designs from the earliest days of the ukiyo-e tradition. They did so with a philosophy of trying to get as close to the originals as possible, keeping to the same dimensions, having special paper made that closely matched the early prints, and using the same techniques - including hand-painting the colours (many of the designs dated from the era before colour-printing had been invented). This is one such print: the outlines are carved and printed in the usual way, but the colouring is done by hand, using the old pigments. (The red colorant here - tan - has partially oxydized). The crease line near the bottom of the print is actually a joint - in the old days paper of the requisite dimension was not available, but even though modern papermakers can make larger paper, Adachi stuck with the older method, in the interests of making an accurate reproduction.
