New Ukiyo-e Hero Coming Along Nicely

Posted by Cameron Hilker on July 30, 2018 [Permalink]

Over the weekend, Suga-san made progress on a batch of test prints, so we snapped some pictures of a rare combination of people: the publisher, carver, and printer all in one place!

Jed Henry has supplied us with a new Ukiyo-e Heroes design, Chung-san san carved the blocks, and Suga-san has started testing them out. On Saturday, David Bull and Chung-san joined her to discuss colors, block adjustments and more.

Dave and Suga-san talked together about colors and printing techniques for this design, "Times Burned Bright". In the lead-up to a new design's release, many discussions are held to finalize all the details and catch any mistakes anyone has made along the way.

The team (except designer Jed Henry, who is living in the US) worked together this weekend to determine which sections of which blocks could be removed or adjusted to make the final image line up perfectly.

It is still a work in progress, but you can see the layers coming together in these partially-completed test prints!

We like to share pictures of scenes from all stages of the production of a print not only because they're fun and we are excited about what we're doing, but also because we hope that they may be of some value to others around the world. As David mentioned today during the morning's Twitch stream, he wishes we had these kinds of photos taken at printing workshops from the early days of Shin-Hanga, or even the Edo Period, ("It would be such a cool thing to have!") but the best we can do is make our own record here at Mokuhankan for those who come after us.

We'll keep you updated as this print gets closer to completion!
