Two Years in the planning ...

Posted by Dave Bull on November 26, 2014 [Permalink]

... and that 'two years' is no exaggeration. Jed and I have been thinking about a certain project for over two years now, right from the time of our first Kickstarter together.

He is a crazy sketcher, and I am a crazy woodblock carver. So it is a no-brainer that we should create a book of sketches, you know ... a 'Henry Manga', along the lines of the well-known Hokusai Manga from years gone by.

But we haven't been able to figure out how to actually put such a thing onto the market. To make such a book would take at least a year ...

Well, we have finally figured out how to make it happen, and no, it's nothing to do with Kickstarter!

The website is here!

Hi Dave,

I have a small suggestion regarding the packaging of your prints.

Looking at http://mokuhankan.com/heroes/manga/unboxing.html the packet content is described as a "Woodblock Print' on the customs/declaration label.

I've found on parcels I receive that any mention of 'wood' merits a closer look by the customs quarantine service. Perhaps you can change that to 'Japanese Print' or similar.

Regards,

Mike.

Mike, as suggestion, instead of "woodblock print" why not use the linguistic and literal translation of "mokuhanga" (wood printing), which is "xylography" (wood drawing)?

Though, personally, I'd prefer sticking to the "mokuhanga" term, which I'd translate it, IMHO, as technique-only-point-of-view: "chromoxylography" (chromo=color, xylo=wood, graph=drawing) or as world-technique-point-of-view: "Japanese xylography".
