Ukiyoe Heroes : Shipping!

Posted by Dave Bull on August 28, 2012 [Permalink]

We hit a major milestone on the Ukiyoe Heroes project last night, with the first 'production' batch of prints coming off my bench! After nearly three months of planning and preparation, this plane has taken off!

Our most recent update video lets you have a peek!

As for the Kickstarter campaign, it now has just over three days to run. And our chart of pledges is really getting kind of boring ... (this kind of boring I could get used to!):

Given that it's only 1pm (project time) and today's total is already at its highest in 17 days, that chart may just get a little more exciting yet!

Indeed! It has already begun ...

... and ... a few minutes ago, another milestone passed by:

David,

These look great. Had a question, is each batch being fully printed by a single printer? For example, was that batch printed completely by you, or is each printer doing a few blocks and then moving the prints to the next station to be addeded to by another printers, like in an assembly line? I can see the benefits of either method, but if it is that each printer completes a batch from start to finish, is there a way to identify who printed the print?

This is something we have thought about a lot, and there are competing considerations. In the old days, the 'workshop' would do jobs like this in assembly line fashion, with different guys working on the blocks as convenience demanded.

None of the ladies here want to do it that way, as you might expect, so for the time being at least, each person will do their batch from start to finish by themselves (with the exception that I will be doing some of their key blocks, as described in last week's A Story A Week. The batch you see in this video was printed in its entirety by me.

As for the identification, I'll be posting about that soon, with some illustrations. We have prepared some small 'blocks' with carver/printer names on them, and will be embossing them into the left margin of each print (not the Chibies, as those are too small). Interestingly enough, that also was covered in a recent Story A Week ...

Will the prints be available after the initial "kickstart"?

Would love to get some of the woodblocks but a bit strapped right now after our AC unit went out. It's Vegas, no life possible without it!

@Maria - Jed will be setting up an online store after the kickstarter campaign ends. Details will be coming out shortly, I believe.

Yes, as Ben mentions, Jed will be setting up an online shop, to handle orders for both his giclées and the woodblocks, and of course for whatever new stuff he comes up with.

He is building/testing as we speak, and the idea is to have it ready to go the moment that Kickstarter closes. (It actually shouldn't be too hard for you to figure out what the URL might be ...)

@Dave,

Thanks for the reply and the links to the stories a week. I had not really explored that area of your website before, but that has worked out for the best. As I sit here, waiting out a hurricane, these have provided me with a ton of interesting stories to read.
