Yoshida sailing ship - more test printing

Posted by Dave Bull on May 18, 2012 [Permalink]

Tsushima-san hasn't been able to be here since Tuesday (those pesky kids!), but she got in another few hours of proofing this morning.

As you can see from this image, we've got two basic approaches underway - one similar to Yoshida's original book, and one that she wants to develop with a much brighter light as the focus:

Neither version is 'there' yet, and it is the 'bright' one which needs quite a few more impressions, to darken the 'non-light areas, particularly around the outside edges, and on the boat, which will appear as more of a silhouette. Unfortunately, Tsushima-san is now gone until Tuesday, so it'll be a while before we can see how those next steps look ...

It might be worth mentioning that one interesting approach to a print like this is to do some of the testing without the keyblock lines getting 'in the way'. If you click to see the enlargement of that photo, you can see that we have done a couple of our proof sheets that way. It sometimes helps 'see' the tonal balance a bit more accurately ...

Seeing the 'bright version' makes me think it could be a good start to modifying the colors into a lovely sunset version as well. There's still time too, since the blocks aren't going anywhere.
