Knife set - more testing of box designs - part 3

Posted by Dave Bull on March 3, 2012 [Permalink]

While having lunch today after a morning of tracing work on my upcoming print, I snuck some 'Mokuhankan time', and made some samples of the little booklet of maintenance information, as well as the label for inside of the box.

They would appear like this:

If you click for the enlargement of this one, you can see the rough finishing work on my prototype box - you can bet that our finished ones won't have that kind of messy finish!

The booklet is a 12-page affair (no 'design' yet; this is just for layout and planning):

Some of the information will repeat what will be on the website I guess, but it will be important to have it 'saved' as a permanent part of the set I think.

The inner 6 pages will be a detailed description of each tool type, along with specific sharpening information:

One other thing to mention ... I have begun work on the new tool section of the web site. No order form yet (!), but if you follow the 'Tools' link at the bottom of this page, you'll find the initial intro page there, as well as links to some of the background of this project ...

Even Putin is interested now that you include Latin.

I have been following these posts with great interest and enjoyment! Thank you for all the enticing descriptions, ideas, methods and photos. Although I am not a woodblock printer, I would love to own a set of these tools especially in that beautifully crafted box you are designing. I also like the fact that you are going with the more traditional design of your handles - sometimes older is better. I have always loved woodblock prints (I own a few) so the purchase of this tool set may inspire me to try creating some of my own. Can't wait to see the finished set!

Can't wait to see the finished set!

Thanks for the enthusiastic comments!

We're getting closer, step by step, although my 'normal' work - on the first print in the Arts of Japan series - is of course taking up most of my time right now.

We have another design planned for the box, and I'll be making the next sample for that soon, and we hope to be seeing the next version of the blades themselves shortly too. (The initial trial set from the maker was not shaped in the way that we wanted them to be ...)

The first sample of laser engraving (our name) on the handles wasn't good enough, and we're now going through another round of trials there too. (I'll be posting about this shortly.)

So I'm not sure exactly when this will all 'come together' ... hopefully it won't be all that far off!

Unfortunately Putin did not seem too pleased with the booklet.
