Description

This print shows kabuki actor Ichikawa Sadanji II (1880–1940), perhaps Tokyo's most popular actor from the 1910s to 1930s, as the character Hishikawa Gengobei from the play Imayō Satsuma Uta. It is from the "Creative Prints by Kanpō, First Series" set of six prints published by Satō Shōtarō between 1922 and 1924, and is one of a limited edition of two hundred prints.

The print features an interesting mix of thick and fine brush strokes, and the actor's eye makeup and light-blue stubble and hair has been very cleanly printed. The rich dark mica background is also a highlight of the print. The artist, Yoshikawa Kanpō (1894–1979), had a passion for kabuki theatre and even worked as a stage designer for the Shochiku theater company at one point.
