Description: This is a new/old print, and by that we mean that it is freshly made (printed very recently in our workshop) but uses quite old woodblocks.
The designer is Tsuchiya Koitsu, who lived and worked in the first half of the 20th century, and the block set was originally carved at the request of the publisher Doi Hanga-ten sometime in the 1930s (we believe). That publisher must have produced a great many copies of this little print, because some of the original blocks became quite worn, and were re-carved and replaced in the immediate post-war period. This was a very common procedure, and is not a bad thing actually, as it shows that the publisher cared enough about their productions to go to effort to do this, instead of simply issuing 'worn out' and blurred prints.
We here at Mokuhankan, now using those same blocks here in our own workshop, have continued the process, adjusting and re-carving yet again, in order to produce prints of an acceptable standard. We can't promise you that our version is 'perfect', because there are places on the blocks that have worn beyond easy repair, but we think there is still plenty of life left in them. And after all, I bet the old shrine itself shows plenty of wear and tear if you were to look closely!
