Thank you for your patience!] This edition of Hokusai's iconic image had its origins in the autumn of 2014, being offered to the backers of a Mokuhankan Kickstarter campaign being run to help raise funds for the building of the new shop in the Asakusa district of Tokyo.
The print is based on a copy in the Metropolitan Museum of Art - every line carefully re-traced and then cut into hard cherry wood. Our print is made on the famous Echizen Hosho washi from the workshop of Mr. Ichibei Iwano, a Living National Treasure. The cartouche area is carved on a boxwood insert, to help the lettering last longer under repeated impressions. We have tried to make the carving match the 'brushwork' of the earliest copies as closely as possible ... Each copy is stamped with the names of the designer, carver, and printer ...
