Description: “Karuta” is a Japanese card game, especially popular during the New Year season.

At the time that David Bull first created this particular image, he was just coming to the end of the first year of work on his 10-year project to reproduce the Hyakunin Isshu designs of Katsukawa Shunsho, so he chose a theme related to that poetry - the game of karuta, which traditionally has Japanese poems from the Hyakunin Isshu series printed on them.

He sketched a few of the cards as though they had been slapped into the air during a vigorous round of the game and particularly enjoyed cutting the tatami mat design. If you take the print near a window, or other raking light, you will see the realistic embossing that resulted from his careful cuts.
