At the time that David Bull first created this particular image, he was just coming to the end of the first year of work on his 10-year project to reproduce the Hyakunin Isshu designs of Katsukawa Shunsho, so he chose a theme related to that poetry - the game of karuta, which traditionally has Japanese poems from the Hyakunin Isshu series printed on them. He sketched a few of the cards as though they had been slapped into the air during a vigorous round of the game and particularly enjoyed cutting the tatami mat design. If you take the print near a window, or other raking light, you will see the realistic embossing that resulted from his careful cuts.
