ヒロ湾の夜明け (Morning Light at Hilo Bay)
Description: Gary makes prints in both digital and woodblock form. The digital prints he produces himself directly from his own computer equipment; the woodblock prints are cut and printed to his designs by other craftsmen. His entire body of work is based on a single theme: landscapes of Hawaii. A woodblock print made from another of his designs appeared in David's Surimono Album in 2001.
His designs are very 'quiet'; people are rarely part of the picture, and in most of his images, the sun nearly always shines brightly, as one would expect given his choice of location. But it was the unusual dawn lighting effect that pulled this one to the top of the list for inclusion in the Mokuhankan catalogue. When the printer first saw the sample - with the smooth gradation on that mountain stretching across the entire width of the print - he didn't exactly jump up and down in eager anticipation to get started! But part of what I am trying to do here at Mokuhankan is give these people work with which they can stretch out.
I hope you like this print, and will consider adding it to your collection.
