Description: We have in our Mokuhankan collection of older prints and woodblock printed materials quite a large number of 燐票 (‘rin pyō’) - match label prints - and have reproduced one such set here.

This type of print had an origin in labels printed for gluing onto the little boxes that contained wooden matches, but in the early part of the 20th century they evolved into a genre of their own. All connection with matches was lost; collector groups formed, and these enthusiasts would pool their resources to conceive and commission the production of sets of interesting prints made at this size. Typical themes did overlap somewhat with the old ukiyo-e - travel scenes, actors, or beauties - but also included such things as folk toys, floral and nature themes, and … such ideas as this interesting set of yokai.

The name of the designer of this particular group is lost to us; all we know is the ‘nickname’ of the sponsor of the original set, 南 吉太郎 (Yoshitaro Minami - or ‘Lucky Boy from the South’).

The design used for the outer cover was not part of the original group; it is taken from a collection of yokai by Kawanabe Kyosai, and was carved for this set by Dave.
