"Haven't I seen this somewhere before?", might be a common reaction. The print is new to our catalogue, but does indeed closely resemble another design by Hokusai that we published a few years ago. And the resemblance is not coincidental - both designs are taken from the same source material: the book 'Hokusai Gafu', a collection of his images first published back in 1830. We have an original copy of the book here in our Collection, and have no hesitation in using it as source material to bring Hokusai's creations alive for another generation to enjoy. The locations in Hokusai’s volume are completely imaginary; the book was not a travel guide. But neither was it made up of small ‘snippets’ like his far more famous Hokusai Manga. The pages are full-scale designs, and show every evidence of being carefully crafted in a way to fully transport the viewer to the places.
