Description: This is a fun little item in our catalogue - a pair of 'match label' prints. These have been printed by one of our staff members, using a block set that was given to us by the son of the man who did the carving - Mr. Kametaro Harada.

Collecting small prints of this type was a common activity in Japan in the period before the war, and many thousands of different designs were created. The background of this particular pair is lost to history, and all we know is that they must have been created by Harada-san (both designed and carved) for exchange with other members of one of the collectors groups he was in.

The upper image represents a ちんどん屋 (chindon-ya), an itinerant musician who strolls around the streets advertising such things as a big bargain sale, etc. etc. The lower picture is the kabuki actor Ishikawa Sadanji, active in that pre-war period.

This is actually four prints in one; you will receive two pairs ... one pair in just the key block impression, and one pair in full colour ...

A YouTube video on our channel has a lot more information about match label prints in general, and shows a quick test printing of these very blocks!
