Kiyomizu Temple (set of 4) (清水寺(4丁))Designer: Kawase Hasui | Printer: Natsuki Suga Paper size: 20cm by 14cm | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [M] ? ( Change currency: $ / £ / € ) Price: Description: This is a wonderfully interesting item, part of our collection of prints being made from 'antique' blocks owned by the Doi Hanga company. The exact date of origin of this block set isn't known, but it presumably dates from the immediate post-war period. Because of the extremely (high/low) dollar/yen rate at the time, woodblock prints were very cheap for tourists, and there was a flourishing business in making such things as Xmas cards, woodblock printed calendars, and such items. And you can see from this print just how the publishers made their business even more cost-effective: carve four times, and print once! The blocks took much more time to prepare, but once they were ready ... bang bang bang ... out came the prints. For us now, using these blocks isn't quite so cost-effective. They are old and warped, and we are trying to make prints of a generally higher quality that was acceptable for those old greeting cards, so there is no 'bang bang bang' here ... We thought this item would be of most interest to our fans and collectors if we left the sheets in an uncut form. There is another reason why we are going to do it this way - some of the blocks are a bit damaged (see below) and if we cut the sheets apart, around half of the resulting prints would not be so 'presentable' as individual items. In any case, here they are ... we hope this will be of interest! (When Dave was first testing these blocks, to see if this project would be practical, he had a video camera running ... you can see the result on a Youtube video)rn Here are the prints as they come from the final impression ... There are five pieces of wood, cut on both sides. Do you see the split in the wood for the sky block? If you look at the enlargement of the finished prints, you can see the resulting mark (in the lower right print). The key block has been banged up a bit in a few places, and you can see where the border line has been 'plugged' in one place ... Our new printer Natsuki Suga at work on this ...
