Matsushima (松島)Designer: Tsuchiya Koitsu | Carver: Noriko Kawasaki | Printer: Kenichi Kubota Paper size: 27.5cm by 20cm | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? ( Change currency: $ / £ / € ) Price: Description: This design was originally published by the Doi Hanga company in 1936, and Mokuhankan for a few years was producing editions using their block set (paying them a royalty to do so). But that set gradually became more difficult to use, with many repaired places and warped pieces, so we decided to start again with a completely new set of blocks. (The design itself has long been in the public domain, as Koitsu died over 70 years ago.) Our staff carver Noriko Kawasaki took a couple of months to create the block set, and from here on in, our printers will use this set to create a '2nd generation' of prints from Koitsu's design. The image is of one of Japan's most famous scenic destinations - the group of islands near Sendai known as Matsushima (Pine Islands). Just change the sail on that small boat, and this scene could be today ... The embossing on these new prints is different from the prints we made from the old blocks.
