Description: This print is our Mokuhankan reproduction of a design originally created by Kawase Hasui in the pre-war period, probably in the mid-1930s. Reproducing a 20th century design of this type - with its multiple layers of overlapping colour tones - is far more difficult than making an ukiyo-e print, which in contrast is very ‘clean’ and simple.

Because we had no chance to inspect the original block set, we had to proceed with a ‘reverse engineering’ approach, carefully inspecting an original copy to try and determine how the colour had been built up.

We think our version is extremely close to the original, and in one important sense, ours is superior. That pre-war block set was used by many different printers, and most of the copies found in the market these days are quite roughly printed. But because we here at Mokuhankan work ‘out in public’ - with our images and samples clearly visible on the internet to anybody who cares to inspect them - we have to hold ourselves to a different standard. Once our proof printing is done, our printers are held to that standard for all the prints we produce from that block set. We don’t always succeed perfectly, but we do usually get very close.
