( Change currency: $ / £ / € ) Price: Description: This image is one from a large number of very small print designs created by Takahashi Shotei in the 1930’s for one of the Tokyo publishers. As most of the designs in the group are of ‘quaint’ themes, it seems likely that the target audience was foreign tourists in Japan. The one we have chosen here is more neutral, and you don’t have to be a tourist to enjoy its quiet beauty! It was carved for us by a young Welshman who is living here in Japan and apprenticing at the craft with a friend of Dave’s, Asaka Motoharu. Asaka-sensei has expended great effort in recent years in helping to spread knowledge of the traditional techniques as widely as he can, and we are happy to be able to play a part in this endeavour, by providing work for those who have climbed high enough! As for this particular image, I myself have been thinking of is as obviously depicting Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, but remain unable to convince my Japanese staff members of this ...
