Description: This is the Mokuhankan reproduction of a quite rare Hiroshige image - rare in the sense that there seem to be very few copies that have survived. Prints like this would have been produced in huge quantities back in the day, but because they were valued so lightly, there was very little chance of any individual copy surviving into the future. Hopefully, collectors of our version might take a little bit better care of it! :-)

The crane is one Japan's most auspicious symbols - of both longevity and good fortune. In days gone by, it was very common for households to own a number of scrolls to be displayed in the tokonoma, and motifs incorporating such things as a crane, a pine branch, and a sunrise were used on a scroll that would be hung for the new year. We see no sunrise on this design, but even so, perhaps this print was targeted at people without the resources to own such things as scrolls, to use as their own new year decor.

We made this reproduction based on an image of the print found in a western museum, but the quality of the scan was very poor, so we re-created the feather pattern on the bird's body. This is done with the technique known as karazuri (blind embossing) and can be appreciated best by viewing the print under a gentle raking light (such as comes in through a north-facing window). Please try it!
