Description: This is a new/old print, and by that we mean that it is freshly made (printed very recently in our workshop) but uses quite old woodblocks.
The designer is Tsuchiya Koitsu, who lived and worked in the first half of the 20th century, and the block set was originally carved at the request of the publisher Doi Hanga-ten sometime around 1933. Some of the blocks that remain from that publisher's inventory are very heavily worn, but this set is in much better condition. A couple of the faces have been re-carved and replaced - probably in the immediate post-war period, and this was a very common procedure, as it was important for them to keep the blocks in printable condition. We here at Mokuhankan, now using those same blocks here in our own workshop, have continued the process, adjusting and re-carving yet again, in order to produce prints of an acceptable standard.
An interesting feature of prints like this is the fact that because all our pigments are transparent, we can never print light on top of dark. The areas of bright tone here - the cherry blossoms under the lights - have been cut away from all the other blocks. What you are seeing is the white tone of the paper, gently tinted with pink, and this gives the impression of shining light ...
