The Philosopher is under way!

Posted by Dave Bull on June 13, 2012 [Permalink]

Ayumi-san has been here twice this week; on Monday she finished up the testing on her trial run of The Philosopher - a Hokusai design from my Surimono Albums. Here's a snapshot of her result (made on cheap paper for testing):

I'm not so sure if I want to take this next step ... let's compare this with the image from my own album (printed on high-quality washi):

This is the same young girl who came here for the first time waaaaaaay back on May 22nd, never having used a baren before ... and who has now come here a grand total of seven times.

Anyway, the next step is clear - the two of us prepared a stack of 30 sheets of washi on Monday morning, and she's under instructions to do an edition for our catalogue!

In her left-over time on Monday afternoon, she did her first baren tying.

Also not bad ... but she cheated! She's already tied one before ... once ... at the baren-making workshop she is attending (being run by maker Goto-san).

I honestly don't know what to think about this girl. Should I jump up and down laughing, or run and sit in a corner crying!

You mean 'jump up and down laughing' because Ayumi-san learns so fast, and 'run and sit in a corner crying' because it took you so much longer?

Yes Jacques, of course! I'm very happy to see such a competent person, but when I think of how long it took me to gain my own skills ... it does sometimes feel a bit frustrating!

But anyway, my journey was most rewarding, and as we have been saying over on the Baren group: if you're having fun, isn't it better if it takes longer?

It's all the good teaching you are giving! You have got the foundations for a really good workshop, I am so impressed with you all

Welcome to my corner, which happens to have a great wall for banging heads against. What is it with this girl? Can't she fail dismally at something, if only to make us all feel better? ;-) I just hope she is grateful for her gifts...
