Designer: Tsutsui Toshimine Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This print was designed by the Meiji kuchi-e artist Tsutsui Toshimine (C.1863 - 1934). Kuchi-e, literally translated means "mouth pictures," or "opening pictures”. They served as frontispiece illustrations for popular novels and literary magazines from the 1890s through the 1910s. This design depicts a young woman that seems to be in a hurry. The title suggests a storm is coming, so maybe she would like to find a shelter as soon as possible. She is holding a long written paper scroll with one hand. Her dress, her long and loose hair are delicately depicted towards the left side suggesting motion, and the paper scroll seems to be floating around her. An interesting feature is the texture on her outer dress, these lines that suggest textile texture were created with the kara-zuri or “blind” embossing technique. Kara means “empty” or “without,” indicating that no ink is applied to the raised areas and therefore creating an embossed effect that adds a sense of depth and texture to the print. It is a very delicate design executed with meticulous printing technique. Published by Shunyo-do. The print has many crease marks and a small hole in the middle and right side. Due to the lighting in the photo, the crease marks are visible than natural lighting. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
