Description: This print by Utagawa Toyokuni depicts the half-length portrait of the kabuki actor Sawamura Sojuro III as Oboshi Yuranosuke in the play ‘Edo-no-Hana Ako-no-Shiogama’ performed at the Kiri-za Theater in April of the 8th year of Kansei (1796).

Sawamura Sojuro III was best known for his tachiyaku (“young man”) roles. In this design he is wearing a formal ‘kamishimo’ costume (a traditional, formal two-piece ensemble worn by samurai men during the Edo period), and glancing up to the right. The description sheet of the print says that flesh-coloured pigment was used for the outline of the face and neck.

This post-war version was published by the Adachi Company and it was originally part of the ‘Pictures of Actors on the Stage' series.
