Description: This print depicts a girl weaving cotton on a handloom. At first glance, the threads appear to be all white, but they were created with the kara-zuri or “blind” embossing technique. Kara means “empty” or “without,” indicating that no ink is applied to the raised areas and therefore creating an embossed effect that adds a sense of depth and texture to the print.

The threads appear to float delicately against the vibrant pink background, creating a light and graceful effect. Suzuki Harunobu is credited with pioneering the iro-tsubushi technique, in which the background is printed in a single, uniform color. In this print, the pink is particularly eye-catching, enhancing the composition’s elegance.

Harunobu is also known as the first artist to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765 rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints.
