Description: This spectacular winter landscape by Utagawa Hiroshige, executed just one year before the artist’s death, belongs to a group of three triptychs inspired by the classical theme of Setsugetsuka — Snow, Moon, and Flowers. In this work, the theme of snow is explored, while the moon and flowers are depicted in the other two triptychs.

The composition is dominated by immense snow-covered mountains rising in the distance, flanked by bridges on either side and a river flowing through the foreground. The human figures are rendered small in scale, emphasizing the grandeur of the landscape and inviting contemplation of nature’s overwhelming power. This contrast between the tiny figures and the majestic mountains lends the scene an almost spiritual dimension.

The palette is restrained: the dark grey-black of the sky and the cool blue of the river are set against a vast expanse of white. This predominance of white evokes the severity of winter, yet the softly falling snowflakes introduce a sense of quietness and calm, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
